Spend a day at EKC Training Eastchurch: building confidence and employability

5 November 2025
Hear how EKC Training Eastchurch delivers hands-on skills training, helping learners gain qualifications, routine and confidence for their future.

This unique provision encourages learners from HM Prison Standford Hill gain practical experience, build confidence and prepare for their futures. Read on to get an insight into a typical day at EKC Training Eastchurch, and how our team help learners to thrive in a learning environment.

Each learner’s day begins with a short walk down to the centre, around ten minutes along a quiet path. Learners told us it’s one of their favourite parts of the day, as they get a little peace, fresh air and some time to think before starting work. By the time they reach the workshops, they’re focused and ready to work.

Morning in the workshops

Training takes place across a range of trades, including bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, and rail engineering. In carpentry, one learner proudly showed us a door he had hung before moving on to fit the architrave. Another, with years of labouring experience, said he’s using the time to refresh his skills and pick up new techniques.

In bricklaying, a learner showed off a wall he had just completed in 12 hours – 3 hours faster than the benchmark. It was great to see the pride he had over the work he’d just produced independently, and the support of his fellow classmates.

For some, it’s the first time picking up a trowel; for others, it’s a step towards a job already lined up for the future. It’s also clear to see the camaraderie between learners, as those with previous trade experience (who are keen to keep their ‘hand in the game’) help support those who are new to the subject. Regardless, each learner is keen to prove themselves worthy of a place at the Centre, and proud of the work they’re creating.

More than just technical skills

The training at EKC Training Eastchurch is not only about trade qualifications. Learners talked about keeping a routine, working as part of a team and developing a more professional outlook.

One learner described how the programme has helped him mature and regain focus, giving him the drive to return to his previous career, now with an additional skill under his belt.

Many said the centre feels different from other training environments they’ve experienced. They describe it as professional yet relaxed, with tutors who treat them like adults and with respect.

The people making it happen

It’s clear to see the rapport and mutual respect built between learners and the staff at the Centre. Each learner commented how welcoming their tutors have been.

Danny Walder, Head of Centre, enjoys working in this kind of provision. Due to the unique way Danny and his team structure their courses, the learners often comment that attending the centre is almost like going to work, which is a welcome thought for most. Once they return to their quarters at the end of the day, they can relax after a hard days work and have a sense of achievement.

Danny told us many stories of learners going on to find work once they were released. Some have gone on to work onsite for construction companies, whist one is now completing nightshifts as a Cable Joiner on the local rail lines.

During our day we also met Plumbing Lecturer, Mark Bryant, who has been at the centre since it opened. He’s seen it grow from an empty space into a busy, well-equipped facility with expanded workshops, including a purpose-built outdoor bricklaying area and replica rail tracks.

When asked about any standout success stories he spoke about a former learner whose exceptional performance led to a paid role at the centre as a Skills Practitioner. That learner is now a valued member of the team and a positive example to others who visit the centre.

Mark also shared a moment from a small Christmas celebration the team hosted for the learners, where his wife baked a simple tray of cupcakes. One was moved to tears, saying he hadn’t tasted anything as nice in 20 years, which came as a shock and a powerful reminder that small gestures can mean a lot. That day Mark also learnt the value of human connection, and the importance of the work he and his colleagues are doing everyday.

Finishing the day

By the afternoon, projects are tidied away and learners head out with a sense of progress. Whether it’s stepping into a trade, starting a new career, or building confidence, each day at Eastchurch is a step towards a stronger future.

Each achievement, whether it’s a learner completing their first practical task or a tutor recognising progress, reflects the dedication and impact of the team’s work. The commitment of the team at EKC Training Eastchurch highlights the important role education plays in helping individuals build confidence, skills and a sense of purpose for the future.
