We caught up with Stacey, a learner on the Get Into Admin Course at EKC Training Folkestone Centre, to hear about her experience returning to education as an adult.
The course focuses on building practical administrative skills, improving employability, and boosting confidence – something Stacey says has already made a huge difference in her life. She shared what inspired her to join, what she’s learnt so far, and why she’d recommend the course to others who might be thinking about taking that next step.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what brought you to the course?
I decided to join because I wanted to build up my confidence. It was something I needed to do for myself — to feel more sure of what I can do and to hopefully open a few new doors for the future.
I’m really enjoying it. I get on with everyone. We have a laugh now and then, but we know when to put our heads down too. So far, we’ve learnt about things like writing emails, adding signatures, taking screenshots, and lots more. My favourite part is definitely using the computer; that’s what I’ve enjoyed the most.
What kind of support have you had while studying?
We have job coaches who check in with us for a bit of extra help when we need it, and they’ve been great. As for Curtis, our tutor, he’s brilliant! He’s really good at what he does and keeps us all motivated. I like that he’s fair, and we can have a laugh with him.
What’s it been like returning to education as an adult?
It’s different, but it’s been such a positive experience. It doesn’t just feel like College to me, it feels like a door waiting to be opened to new things in the future. There are people of all ages on the course, and that makes a big difference. I’m really glad I’m not the only one in my 30’s, because it helps you feel comfortable and not out of place.
How have you found learning alongside people of different ages?
There’s a nice mix of learners, some younger and some older, but I get on with everyone. It’s actually really interesting having those age differences because you can learn from each other and hear about everyone’s different experiences.
How does this compare to your time at school?
Back at school, we never learnt things like this. The education system’s come a long way since then. What we’re learning now is so much more practical and useful. We’re learning things that will actual help in the world of work.
How have you managed balancing the course with your personal life?
It’s been a bit of a challenge. I’ve been out of work for a while, so I’ve had to get used to early mornings again and being back in a routine. Before I started, I didn’t really have anything to look forward to, I was just at home with nothing much to do. But since starting the course, I’ve got something that gets me out of the house, back into a routine, and gives me something to look forward to each week. It’s made a massive difference.
What would you say to someone thinking about doing this course?
If you feel like it’s right for you, then do it – no matter your age. Think of it as a new chapter waiting to begin. If you’re struggling to find work or not sure what to do next, this course is a great opportunity and will help to open new doors for you. You’ll learn skills that companies are looking for, but you’ll also grow in confidence — and that’s just as important.
