Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant

The primary role of the Specialist Teaching Assistant is to work collaboratively with teachers and other professionals to support and enhance pupils’ learning, either individually or in groups. They contribute to the planning, delivery and assessment of learning activities, ensuring pupils understand their learning objectives, are able to access the curriculum, and remain engaged in order to make progress.

Specialist Teaching Assistants support learners with diverse needs, promoting independence, self-belief, social inclusion and high self-esteem as integral aspects of pupil wellbeing. They help to create and maintain a positive, inclusive, safe and nurturing learning environment in which pupils can thrive.

This is an active role that requires reflective practice, adaptability and the use of evidence-informed strategies to support learning. Specialist Teaching Assistants act as positive role models, demonstrating professionalism, honesty and integrity. They work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, contribute to planning and review processes, and engage with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate.

Promoting Fundamental British Values through spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, inclusive practice and positive behaviour is central to the role, contributing to improved pupil outcomes, personal development and lifelong learning.
