More Than Just a Competition: What Is KFE4Skills?

KFE4Skills is one of the biggest events in the Kent Further Education calendar, but it’s much more than a competition. It celebrates talent, showcases skills, and helps apprentices take confident steps forward in their careers.

KFE4Skills is an annual competition which brings together apprentices and learners from East Kent Colleges Group, MidKent College and North Kent College to put their skills to the test.

Hundreds of participants compete across a wide range of industries, including Construction and the Built Environment, Creative and Design, Engineering, Manufacturing and Automotive, Catering and Hospitality, Hair and Beauty, Health and Social Care, and many more.

Apprentices take on challenges designed to test their skills and prove they work to high industry standards.  These tasks will correlate to the work they carry out in their job roles. They solve problems, manage time pressures, and demonstrate their technical skills in real-world scenarios. Whether they construct complex brickwork, produce detailed designs, or deliver professional services, during the competition apprentices prove they can perform to required professional standards.

KFE4Skills builds confidence and supports professional development. It encourages apprentices to challenge themselves, refine their skills, and demonstrate their abilities in front of peers, trainers, and industry professionals.

Every participant earns a certificate, and top performers receive gold, silver, and bronze medals. More importantly, apprentices gain valuable experience they can take back into the workplace to support their career progression. Employers recognise KFE4Skills as a strong indicator of professionalism, technical ability, and commitment to excellence.

The competition also connects apprentices directly with industry experts. Employers and sector specialists serve as judges, providing valuable feedback and opportunities to build professional networks. These connections can support career progression and help apprentices continue to develop within their chosen industry.

KFE4Skills also opens doors beyond Kent. As an event officially endorsed by WorldSkillsUK, it acts as a launchpad for national and international competitions. Top performers can progress to compete against skilled professionals from across the country and beyond, gaining wider recognition for their expertise.

At the 2025 KFE4Skills Trades competition, Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery apprentice Tim competed and won a silver medal. Reflecting on the event, he said:
“It’s a great experience, and it’s a good thing to put on my CV in the future. I’m always learning, I just want to be the best carpenter around, and EKC Training has shown me how to do just that.”

At its core, KFE4Skills celebrates the strength of apprenticeships and technical training in Kent. It highlights the ambition of apprentices and the value of developing skills within the workplace. Whether apprentices win medals or gain new confidence and experience, they leave KFE4Skills better equipped to progress in their careers.
