Learners are taking their first steps into the Health and Care sector, thanks to a new collaboration between EKC Training and Social Enterprise Kent (SEK).
The 12-week employability initiative is designed to support individuals into roles within the NHS and local care employers.
As part of the programme at our Thanet Training Centre, we deliver an intensive three-week Level 1 Health and Care course. Running five days per week, this course provides learners with a strong foundation in areas such as person-centred care, safeguarding, communication, and dementia awareness, alongside the essential digital skills that are required across modern care roles.
Programme lecturer, Katie Simcevic, explained:
“With this programme, learners gain a real understanding of the health and care sector. It’s about building their confidence and giving them the knowledge they need to take into interviews and then their first steps into employment.
“It’s been really positive working alongside SEK. There is strong communication and a shared focus on supporting everyone to succeed. The additional support they provide alongside our training is making a real difference.”
Throughout the wider 12-week programme, learners also receive dedicated support from SEK advisors, including help with CV writing, identifying transferable skills, and exploring suitable pathways for their next steps.
By working closely with employers, including taking part in opportunities within the NHS, these learners are introduced to a range of entry-level roles such as care assistants, administrative staff and support positions.
While employment is not guaranteed, those who complete the programme are in a stronger position when applying for jobs, with their participation recognised by employers.
Clare, formerly a graphic designer, is using the programme to take her existing skills into a new direction.
She said during her studies with us: “It’s been fantastic so far. I want to become an art therapist and it’s insightful to see what that next stage could look like. The learning and development opportunities with EKC Training mean I’m on a new adventure.
“Being able to come together with other people in a similar position is also encouraging as we can work on our teamwork and personal skills.”
Fellow learner, Michael, said about why he joined this programme:
“I wanted to do something more rewarding. My previous jobs have been varied, and this is my first insight into health and care. I’m not very literate with computers but I feel a bit more confident now thanks to Katie and the team. So far, it’s been very informative and I’m looking forward to the rest of it.”
EKC Training looks forward to continuing this collaboration with Social Enterprise Kent, by supporting more learners across Thanet in developing the skills and confidence they need for health and care.
For anyone interested in starting in these rewarding sectors, we also offer ‘Get Into Health and Social Care’ courses across Kent, providing the same supportive, practical learning experiences and guidance to help you take your first steps into employment.
