Learning plastering is easier with real experts guiding you. At EKC Training Construction Centre, experienced lecturers help beginners build skills step by step in a supportive, hands-on environment.

Learning plastering is much easier when you’re guided by people who’ve spent years doing the job for real. At EKC Training Construction Training Centre, our expert lecturers combine practical experience with a supportive teaching style, helping beginners build skills step by step.

With that same spirit, we’ve put together a few beginner friendly plastering tips to help you get started.

Prepare your surface properly

The most important part of plastering is preparing your surface. Plaster won’t stick to every material, and even when it will, the surface needs to be clean. Remove any wallpaper scraps, loose plaster, dust, or debris before you begin. A properly prepped surface helps the plaster adhere well and gives you a smooth base to work from.

Clean as you go

Leaving the cleanup until later might sound tempting, but in practice it just makes life harder. Dried plaster is tough to remove, and dirty tools can cause your mix to go off. Keeping your buckets and tools clean as you work saves time, reduces stress, and helps you achieve a better finish.

Thin layers are key

Applying plaster in thin layers is the secret to getting a smooth, even finish. Thin coats dry more quickly and are much easier to control than thick ones. Building up layers gradually gives you more consistency and better results.

Start with a small trowel

A large trowel may seem like it’ll make the job easier, but it can be tricky to handle. Beginners are usually advised to start with a standard 11‑inch trowel. As you grow in confidence and technique, you can move up to a larger trowel to cover more surface area efficiently.

Practice skimming first

Skimming is the process of plastering onto an already-prepped surface such as plasterboard. It is a great way for beginners to build their skills. If you want to understand the full range of techniques, our two-week Introduction to Construction course may be a perfect place to start.

Don’t get discouraged

Plastering is a craft that takes patience and practice. Your early attempts won’t be perfect, and that’s completely normal. Every wall you work on develops your skills and every mistake teaches you something valuable. Stick with it.

If these tips have inspired you, imagine what you could achieve with expert lecturers, a wide range of tools, and practical training.
