Learners will work on developing the following knowledge, skills and behaviours:

• Work Methods, including; the purpose, characteristics and safe use of a range of equipment, tools and materials, as well as work hazards, safe working and working at height.
• Responding to customer needs, including; effective and appropriate communication, use of IT, time scheduling and costs, as well as knowledge of company services.
• Construction Industry and Building Methods, including; knowledge of key differences between modern and traditional construction methods, different industry sectors and building methods to inform work practice, as well as systems of working in different sectors.
• Product and specification Information, including; the causes of common problems and how to prevent these, knowledge of design and colour, differences of each product type, as well as drying, curing and recoating times, interpretation and use of health and safety information, data sheets and risk assessments.
• Preparation, Application and Removal, including; difference in systems for new and pre- decorated surfaces, types of preparation and application systems, traditional and modern methods of making good surfaces, techniques of application, as well as systems for metals, wood, plastic and factory finishes.

We must ensure that an apprentice spends the required minimum of contracted working hours developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours illustrated on the Standard. This is achieved via a flexible approach and also by using learning that occurs as part of the job role within the workplace:

• Regular assessor visits at workplace (Monthly)
• Reviews in the workplace with Line Manager
• College workshop sessions with lecturer weekly

End-Point Assessment is the final test for apprentices during their apprenticeship. It is designed to be an objective and impartial assessment of an apprentice’s knowledge, skills and behaviours.  At the end of an apprenticeship, the apprentice will go through a ‘gateway’ process where they are signed-off by their employer as ready for a final assessment of their knowledge and practical capabilities. The assessment will be conducted and graded by an independent End Point Assessment Organisation.

NOCN are the end point assessment organisation and the test will consist of:

• Knowledge test – this test will consist of multiple-choice questions on either a paper-based or computer-based platform.
• Skills test – assessed over three consecutive days by an Independent Assessor, this assessment will holistically assess skills, knowledge and behaviours acquired throughout the apprenticeship.
• Professional discussion – assessed by an Independent Assessor following the skills test, this discussion will consist of questions that clarify and probe the apprentice’s knowledge and skills based on the portfolio of evidence developed by the apprentice.

Learners may have experience in a similar course/job role and will hold a GCSE Grade 4/3 or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English. Maths and English are a vital part of your apprenticeship and can really support your progression on your chosen course.

If you do not already hold these levels of Maths and English, we have a friendly and experienced team of lecturers; who can support you throughout and will arrange exams once you are ready. We deliver Functional Skills in a variety of ways; including classroom based and online study.
