Electricians will work on developing the skills and knowledge to:

• Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems
• Understand and apply the practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
• Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
• Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
• Understand and apply the electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems
• Oversee and organise the work environment.

Installation Electricians must also:

• Understand and apply the principles of planning and selection for the installation of electrotechnical equipment and systems in buildings, structures and the environment.

Maintenance Electricians must also:

• Understand and apply the practices and procedures for planning and preparing to maintain electrotechnical systems and equipment.

Electricians will work on developing the following behaviours to:

• Work reliably and effectively without close supervision.
• Accept responsibility for the work of themselves and others.
• Accept allocate and supervise technical and other tasks.
• Use oral, written and electronic methods for the communication of technical and other information.
• Work effectively with colleagues, other trades, clients, suppliers and the public.
• Undertake work in a way that contributes to sustainable development.
• Maintain and enhance competence in own area.
• Exercise responsibilities in an ethical manner.

We must ensure that an apprentice spends the required minimum of contracted working hours developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours illustrated on the Standard. This is achieved via a flexible approach and also by using learning that occurs as part of the job role within the workplace:

• Regular assessor visits at workplace (Every 8 – 10 weeks)
• Reviews in the workplace with Mentor
• College workshop sessions with lecturer weekly.

Electricians will be required to achieve the following before EPA:

• Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification, (Installation) or (Maintenance).
• Complete the minimum off-the-job training.
• GCSE Grades 4/C or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths.
• Complete a portfolio evidence.

Learners may have experience in a similar course/job role and will hold a GCSE Grade 4/C or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English. Maths and English are a vital part of your apprenticeship and can really support your progression on your chosen course.

If you do not already hold these levels of Maths and English, we have a friendly and experienced team of lecturers; who can support you throughout and will arrange exams once you are ready. We deliver Functional Skills in a variety of ways; including classroom based and online study.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, the apprentice can apply to be recognised by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) against the Engineering Council’s UK Spec as an Engineering Technician. This will enable them to have professional recognition and adopt (EngTech) in their title.

The apprentice will be able to apply for the appropriate Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) card by the Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry (JIB), and will also be able to apply for ‘Electrician’ status from the JIB (Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry).

Typical job roles include; Installation electrician, Maintenance electrician and Electrician.

On completion, apprentices may choose to:

• Register with the Joint Industry Board (JIB) for their Gold Card.
• Study Electrical Inspection and Testing (2391) Level 3 .
• Study Design Erection and Verification (2396) Level 4
• Progress to a Building Services Degree Level 5/ 6.
