Throughout the Apprenticeship, learners will learn how to:

• Work safely within a laboratory
• Prepare and perform laboratory tasks following specified methodologies and techniques
• Use specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, including calibration where required
• Produce reliable, accurate data and keep accurate records of laboratory results
• Analyse, interpret and evaluate data
• Communicate scientific information appropriately using Laboratory Information Management Systems
• Apply scientific techniques for data presentation. e.g. statistics
• Recognise problems and apply appropriate scientific methods to identify causes and solutions
• Participate in continuous business performance improvement.

We must ensure that an Apprentice spends the required time developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours illustrated on the Standard.

This is achieved via a flexible approach and also by using learning that occurs as part of the job role within the workplace:

• Regular meetings with dedicated Trainer
• Reviews every 8-10 weeks with Trainer and line manager/mentor
• Monthly online workshops
• Three skills days at EKC Canterbury College per year

End-Point Assessment is the final test for apprentices during their apprenticeship. It is designed to be an objective and impartial assessment of an apprentice’s knowledge, skills and behaviours developed during the course of their apprenticeship programme. At the end of an apprenticeship, the apprentice will go through a ‘gateway’ process where they are signed-off by their employer as ready for a final assessment of their knowledge and practical capabilities. The assessment will be conducted and graded by an independent End Point Assessment Organisation.

The test will consist of:

• Knowledge test
• Observation with questioning
• Structured interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence

On completing this course, you could progress on to:

• Higher level apprenticeships in science and healthcare
• University (e.g. BSc Biomedical Science)

This apprenticeship is recognised by the relevant professional bodies at Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) level, for which there is a requirement that the technician will participate in subsequent continuing professional development on completion of the apprenticeship.
