Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship

Laboratory technicians work in a wide range of organisations, including but not exclusively, chemical, primary and secondary pharmaceutical, biotechnology, formulated products, nuclear companies; and analytical science services. A laboratory technician may carry out both routine and one-off laboratory testing and perform a variety of technical support functions.

During the programme learners will complete the Level 3 Laboratory Technician Standard, online IOSH certificated course and Health & Safety courses (e.g., COSHH, Risk Assessment, DSE Awareness, Manual Handling Awareness, Fire Awareness, GDPR Awareness).


Throughout the Apprenticeship, learners will learn how to:

  • Work safely within a laboratory
  • Prepare and perform laboratory tasks following specified methodologies and techniques
  • Use specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, including calibration where required
  • Produce reliable, accurate data and keep accurate records of laboratory results
  • Analyse, interpret and evaluate data
  • Communicate scientific information appropriately using Laboratory Information Management Systems
  • Apply scientific techniques for data presentation. e.g. statistics
  • Recognise problems and apply appropriate scientific methods to identify causes and solutions
  • Participate in continuous business performance improvement.
