Course overview

The Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing (Foundation) is an ideal starting point if you’re looking to retrain, upskill or begin a career in the plumbing and heating industry.

Designed as a Substantial Vocational Qualification, this course gives you the practical skills, technical knowledge and industry understanding needed to take your first steps into Building Services Engineering, with a clear pathway toward becoming a Plumber or Plumbing & Heating Engineer.

You’ll learn in a supportive, practical environment, building confidence through practical workshop sessions alongside essential classroom learning. Whether you’re changing career, returning to work, or starting out for the first time, this course provides a structured and achievable progression route to the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating, Domestic Heating or Level 3 Plumbing Foundation qualification.

This course is taught over 2 days per week for 6 months or 1 evening per week for 1 academic year.

Course information

This course combines hands-on practical training with key industry knowledge, giving you a strong foundation on how to work safely, professionally and competently on domestic plumbing systems. The qualification requires the learner to complete 10 mandatory units and includes the assessment of both practical skills and knowledge.

You will learn how to:
Work safely and professionally on site
Understand health and safety regulations, safe working practices and how to prepare a work area properly. These are essential skills for working in real homes and Building Services Engineering (BSE).

Communicate effectively in the plumbing industry
Learn how to communicate clearly with customers, colleagues and supervisors, helping you work confidently as part of a team and provide a professional service.

Apply environmentally responsible working practices within BSE
Understand how to work sustainably, reduce waste and protect the environment which is increasingly important skills in modern plumbing and construction.

Prepare sites and fabricate pipework
Gain practical experience in site preparation, measuring, cutting, bending and jointing pipework, using industry-standard tools and techniques.

Install and maintain domestic plumbing systems, including:
• Cold water systems
• Hot water systems
• Central heating systems
• Rainwater systems
• Above-ground drainage systems
You’ll learn how to install, test, maintain and fault-find these systems, building real-world skills that employers look for.
