16 December 2024
We spoke to Tamsin bout her role, her experiences and why she became a Lecturer at EKC Training.

Tamsin is one of the Rail Lecturers at EKC Training, helping those interested in working on the tracks gain the skills they need to start work. We spoke to her about her role, her experiences and why she became a Lecturer at EKC Training.

What is your background?

My background is in railway engineering- I’ve worked on the railway now for over 19 years! I hold a degree in Railway Engineering and began teaching in January 2024.

I started my career as a surveyor on the railway and decided to move into a more technical role with Network Rail. There, I completed my degree and officially became a Railway Engineer.

Why did you become a lecturer for EKC Training?

I transitioned into teaching at EKC Training because I wanted to do something more fulfilling—helping others reach their goals. With my extensive experience across so many different areas of the railway industry, I can provide learners with valuable insights, giving them a clear understanding of the career paths available once they’re qualified.

What’s your favourite part of the role?

My favourite part of the role is guiding learners during the courses and watching their unique skills shine through. It’s great to be able to give them the qualification that means they can immediately apply in the workforce.

What Rail qualifications does the Centre offer?

We offer two qualifications: a Level 2 NVQ in Railway Maintenance and a Level 2 Certificate in Rail Underpinning Knowledge. Once learners complete these, we also help them get into a Personal Track Safety (PTS) course so they can go straight into a job.

What do the courses involve?

The courses are a blend of practical and theoretical training, covering 13 different and important topics related to track maintenance. I also teach practical skills include changing sleepers, replacing rails, and restoring track geometry.

A critical part of our programme includes teaching health and safety practices, with a focus on using the correct equipment and PPE such as hi-visibility jackets and ear defenders.

Tell us of a student success story

One of my students recently completed his PTS and was immediately offered a job with Cleshar, working in railway track maintenance, which I’m proud of him for. He now has a stable career in the industry and is starting to look at different roles in the Rail industry to progress into.

Why are these courses beneficial?

These courses are highly effective, providing practical skills that allow you to enter the workforce directly. When someone completes the course, EKC Training can help them prepare for their next steps with essentials like CV and cover letter support, which is invaluable.
