Studying at Dover – Harvey Lusher, Rail Engineering Track Maintenance

31 January 2025
We had the chance to speak with Harvey about his experience on the Rail Engineering course and what he's enjoyed the most.

Harvey Lusher has started his Rail course at the EKC Training Dover Centre and is already fully immersed in this exciting opportunity.

We had the chance to speak with him during one of the class-based sessions, where learners are introduced to essential skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a dynamic career on the railway.

Why did you decide to join the Rail course at EKC Training?

“I have always worked locally around Canterbury doing scaffolding, but I fancied a career change into something slightly different.

“I have a few friends who have studied this course before. They’re now working really well on the railways in their own carers, and it inspired me to give the course a go.”

What has your experience been so far?

“My experience has been really good so far. We’ve been doing a lot of maths and how it links up in relation to the work we will do on the railway.

“I never really paid much attention in school, and maths was never my strong point, so it’s quite good to be going over all of this again. Learning more about maths and equations is educating me further.”

What do you hope to do once you’ve finished your course?

“I’d like to qualify and then work my way up and set myself up for a successful career in the future.

“I also wanted to develop as a person on the course, but I’d say overall it’s already making me a better person, which I like.”

How easy is it to balance this course around your life?

“As I’m currently unemployed it’s pretty easy and convenient for me to come to Dover and study.

“I get the train down here in the morning, spend the day here, and then go home afterwards.

“There are also financial support options if you need them, to be able to travel and do the course.”

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in a course but is worried about going back to education?

“I’d definitely say give it a shot. Having this opportunity as an adult has been great for me.

“Starting now has allowed me to focus on my career before I have further life responsibilities, like financial commitments.

“It’s a rewarding step to take at any stage, but starting earlier can make it easier to manage.”

What’s the best part of studying here at Dover that you’ve found so far?

“I like the social aspect of the course. Already in my class I’m meeting new people, understanding their situations and talking about them and their lives.

“It’s nice to be studying alongside similar people to myself, to see what they’re like, and why they’re studying in the Dover Centre too.

“It’s a very friendly place to study and everyone I’ve spoken to has been welcoming. It’s a great environment and everyone has a good attitude about the course and the future. I’m looking forward to the next few weeks!”
