We caught up with Thomas during his Level 2 English class, to hear more about his journey and how the Centre has supported him along the way.

It’s been just over a year since Thomas Graham joined EKC Training Dover Centre, and in that time, he’s made significant progress in his Maths, English and overall confidence.

We caught up with Thomas during his Level 2 English class, to hear more about his journey and how the Centre has supported him along the way.

Why did you choose to study here at the EKC Training Dover Centre?

“I chose to study in Dover with EKC Training because I’ve studied elsewhere for English and Maths before and didn’t feel like I was achieving anything.

“I had a word with my job coach about it, and she said that EKC Training was enrolling new learners for English and Maths in the area. She advised that if I was happy to go and speak to the team, I could see if I could get enrolled onto a course.

“Ever since then, I’ve been here, and I feel it was a really good decision for me to make. I’ve been studying here in Dover just over a year now.”

Have you felt that your confidence in English and Maths has gotten better?

“Studying here has given me a bit more confidence overall. I’m glad I made the switch to EKC Training.

“Maths is still a difficult one for me because there’s so much you’ve got to remember, but my lecturers support me wherever they can and guide me during the lessons.

“English, I’ve always found easier, but it’s just having to remember how to get your ideas onto paper. I’m also improving my grammar with the course.”

How do you feel the classes differ from school?

“Everyone’s more mature and more focused. As there are less people per class – this also helps.

“The environment is quieter and the support systems in place are more focused on your own learning. It’s a very calm atmosphere which is perfect for my needs.”

Have you been able to use any of the skills you’ve learned so far in your life?

“My English skills have come out a lot more. Recently when I was at an interview, I was able to answer more questions, elaborate on my answers, and be able to speak more.

“Normally, when I’m in an interview, I shut down. I hate being put on the spot. I’d say my recent experience shows that the course has helped.”

How have you managed to balance these courses around your life?

“I’m signed on at the moment with the Job Centre, but the staff here understand and make sure the courses work around that.

“Instead of having to come to Dover on multiple occasions, I can get my work done here and my work done with the Job Centre on the same day. It’s very manageable.”

Is there a pathway you see yourself going down after this?

“I’m just hoping that improving my skills will help me get a job. The reason I’m studying these courses here is that I’ve been told by the Job Centre and in interviews that working on English and Maths will really help my job prospects.”

What advice would you give to another adult who is worried about going back into education?

“I would recommend it especially as it’s a lot different from school.

“It’s more focused on your time and works around you. If you’ve got an appointment, you can juggle things around.

“It’s worth studying here as it can help you get into a better job or get a job, as well as giving you confidence.”
