The apprentice and mentor experience will turn a good experience into a great one.
This relationship develops confidence, practical skills, and a deeper understanding of a trade that only comes from hands-on experience. Apprenticeships are more than just a pathway to a career; they are a journey of learning, growth, and discovery.

Learning Through Real-World Problems
We spoke to Sam, an apprentice at Barretts in Canterbury, working towards becoming a qualified mechanic.
“I have been learning how to competently carry out AUC (approved used checks) on a variety of different cars such as Land Rover, BMW, Mini, and Jaguar.
“I have also been carrying out PDI (pre-delivery inspection) on the daily, meaning I am working towards being confident independently”, commented Sam.
He has seen the benefits the value of hands-on experience in the motor vehicle industry.
Apprenticeships help the learners apply theoretical knowledge in practical, real-world scenarios. Sam explained: “I wanted to be an apprentice to learn how to actually carry out the stuff I am learning in a real working environment and working on real-world problems on actual people’s cars.”
Sam is gaining a depth of understanding that classroom instruction cannot provide through tasks such as fitting accessories, performing clutch repairs, and exploring the intricacies of gearboxes.
The Mentor’s Role in Guiding the Apprentice
A mentor’s expertise and guidance are instrumental in shaping the apprentice’s experience. Nigel, Sam’s mentor in the workshop, talked about the value of this relationship.
“An apprentice can be beneficial, as with training and guidance, the apprentice will be able to carry out tasks to aid in the efficient operation of the workshop and improving productivity.”
Nigel emphasises the importance of initiative and routine, saying: “When using their initiative over time, they can develop a routine that benefits the workshop team and themselves.”
This reflects the benefits of a mentorship. The apprentice grows in skill and confidence while the workshop benefits from their contributions.
Mentors provide a wealth of knowledge and opportunities for growth.

Apprenticeships are a Stepping Stone
For Sam, his apprenticeship is paving the way for his future career.
“I want to get my qualification as a mechanic so I can independently use the knowledge I have gained from the apprenticeships as a whole to work on people’s cars and carry out big jobs all the time.”
By working under Nigel’s mentoring, Sam is acquiring technical skills and developing the confidence to diagnose and address complex vehicle issues on his own. Having a mentor and gaining practical experience is how apprenticeships stand out alongside learning in the typical classroom setting.
