Why adult learning is different to a traditional school environment

3 September 2025
We spoke with Katie, an Adult Training Lecturer at EKC Training Thanet Centre, about how they create a supportive environment for learners.

Meet our Lecturer

Nora Zemaitiene

Nora, ESOL Lecturer at the EKC Training Thanet Centre, spoke to us about her love for her students and how she sees them grow in confidence with each lesson they attend.

For students in the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) programmes, learning English is a gateway to independence.

“The staff are very friendly and supportive. It’s a very relaxed environment and I really like it here.

“I’ve really enjoyed meeting people and helping with tasks like filing, answering phones, and scanning documents. It’s important work because records need to be kept properly.

“My courses are helping me prepare for an apprenticeship either at a College or with a legal conveyancing firm I’ve applied to through the apprenticeship scheme.

“It’s fantastic that the courses have been free for me, especially since I’m on Universal Credit at the moment. Some online courses can be expensive, so this has been a real bonus.”

Get Into Administration

“I would recommend this centre to anybody that was going back into adult education or wanting to move back into adult education. Joining here was such a quick paced thing and I haven’t looked back.

“Within the first session to be honest we were having a laugh but still doing all of the stuff that we needed to do. We were able to put a fun approach to it so it wasn’t so rigid and I think that’s really worked within our group.

“If you’re nervous, if you’re anxious, if you’re panicked, you’re not entirely sure about everything just take a breather. Absorb the place, come in, look around, find your surroundings and get in your comfort zone because really honestly this place is amazing.”
