We’re proud to see our students take their next steps into careers that make a real difference within our society. One of those students is Callum, who began his plumbing journey at EKC Dover College as a full-time student before securing an apprenticeship with ESS (Energy Saving Specialist), a local plumbing firm run by Billy Roberts and Nick Arnold.
ESS are known in the Dover area for delivering a range of sustainable plumbing solutions, from solar to heat pumps, and Callum is thriving as part of their team. Now in his second year of the Plumbing and Domestic Heating Apprenticeship, he shares what life is really like as an apprentice.

What do you enjoy most about being an apprenticeship?
“Firstly, it’s great to learn a trade. I love meeting new people and knowing that I’m helping them. Every day is a learning day with new experiences and problems to solve. The team I work with are very supportive in my training journey, and they’re committed to improving the industry by buying into the apprenticeship scheme.”
After you’ve finished your apprenticeship and become a fully qualified NVQ Level 3 plumber, what are your plans?
“I’d love to specialise in air source heat pumps and unvented hot water systems, as I believe they’re the future of plumbing and essential for protecting our environment. I would love to mentor and support the next generation of apprentices too, because I know first-hand that it’s the best way to learn all aspects of the trade.”
What advice would you give for anybody thinking about getting into the plumbing trade?
“It’s great fun and every day is different. The more you do, the more confident you become, and the more you enjoy it. It can be hard at times, but I think it’s well worth it.”
