Students celebrate 200 years of Rail Engineering at the East Kent Railway heritage site

9 October 2025
Rail Engineering Track Maintenance students worked with Network Rail to complete essential maintenance tasks at the East Kent Railway heritage site.

Our recent cohort of Rail Engineering Track Maintenance students had the fantastic opportunity to work alongside members of staff from Network Rail, and volunteers from the East Kent Railway to complete essential maintenance tasks on the heritage railway site in Shepherdswell.

Students enjoyed their day work alongside Network Rail professionals

The students had a busy day putting their newfound knowledge to the test working on various parts of the rail infrastructure. Their work including servicing and adjusting track switches, inspecting and repairing crossings, and measuring plain line geometry to ensure the rails were correctly aligned.

Alongside these technical tasks, they practiced problem solving and teamwork, giving them an insight into the skills needed to excel in the industry.

Throughout the day the students had the opportunity to network with the Network Rail professionals giving them valuable advice and contacts for the future of their careers as Rail Engineers.

There was a positive atmosphere and great camaraderie between students and Rail Engineers. One Rail Engineering Track Maintenance student commented: “It has been a brilliant day, I have made some great contacts within the industry, which will prove useful when I am searching for jobs in the future.”

Rail Engineering Lecturer, Jason Rose, oversaw the fantastic work from his students. Feeling very proud he exclaimed: “The students’ efforts and positive attitude throughout the works has been outstanding, and it was fantastic to hear such encouraging feedback from Network Rail staff.

“This success reflects not only their hard work but also the achievements we’ve made together through EKC Training.”
