Staff Spotlight: Martin Webb

29 June 2026
Martin is the our Head of Plumbing and Electrical Apprenticeships. In this blog, we explore his work and his advice to apprentices and employers.

After a successful 20-year career running his own welding and fabrication businesses across London and Kent, Martin Webb brought his industry knowledge into education by joining EKC Group as a Welding Technician eight years ago.

Martin’s EKC Group story

Shortly after joining EKC Group, Martin took on an additional role as a Welding Assessor, working directly with apprentices and supporting them throughout their training. It was during this time that he saw the positive impact apprenticeships can have for both apprentices, and employers looking to develop skilled workers. Inspired by the opportunities apprenticeships create, Martin decided to continue building his career within education and training.

His commitment to supporting apprentices led him to progress into the role of Apprenticeship Manager before becoming Head of Department, where he oversaw a broad range of curriculum areas including Welding, Engineering, Motor Vehicle, Plumbing, Electrical and Gas. Martin now leads Plumbing and Electrical Apprenticeships for EKC Training.

Martin draws on both his extensive industry experience and years of educational leadership to guide apprenticeship trainers across EKC Group. These trainers help our Plumbing and Electrical apprentices develop the skills, confidence and knowledge they need to build successful careers in the construction and building services sectors.

Martin’s advice for apprentices

“I think apprenticeships are a brilliant way to learn. They are a great alternative to university because you’re learning while you’re earning. In my opinion, the biggest advantage is that you’re gaining real work experience while being thoroughly supported.

“Apprenticeships give you valuable workplace experience from day one and set you up for a great career. There is a national skills shortage in plumbing and electrical, which means there is a strong demand for qualified people and excellent job security. You’re unlikely to be without work.

“Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers either. Apprentices can be any age, and many people use them to change career and enter a new industry.”

Martin’s advice for businesses considering taking on an Apprentice

“Apprentices help businesses address skills shortages and build a workforce for the future. They allow employers to develop staff in a way that suits their business and working practices.

“Every company operates differently, so apprenticeships give employers the opportunity to train people to work in the way that best fits their organisation.

“At EKC Training, we work closely with employers and listen to what they need. We can tailor elements of the programme to better support industry requirements. For example, we’re developing additional training around heat pumps, ground source systems, electric vehicle charging points, and solar technology to reflect changes within the sector.

“Employing an apprentice is definitely a benefit and can play a key role in helping a company grow.”
