Dema’s Journey: Starting a new career with Business Administration

25 August 2026
Discover Dema’s journey from hospitality to Business Administration, building confidence, new skills and a clearer path towards a new career.

After years of raising her three children and working in hospitality, Dema decided it was time to take a new direction. Joining the Get Into Business Administration course gave her the chance to develop new skills, rebuild her confidence and start planning for a new career.

“I came from hospitality and felt I needed to start building a new path for myself. I knew I needed some skills to help me transfer into something different, and this course felt like the first step toward the kind of future I want.”

Returning to education as an adult has also given Dema the opportunity to reconnect with herself. As a mum of three, much of her time had previously centred around her children.

She said: “It felt good. I have three kids, and most of my time has always been focused on them, so coming back into a classroom made me realise there’s a world outside of being a mum.”

She says the experience has helped her find a balance between being a mum and building an identity of her own.

“At the beginning I was Mum more than I was Dema. Now I feel like both. I’m still a mum, but I’m also someone who can work, grow, and build a career,” she added.

Throughout the course, Dema has developed her Microsoft Office skills while strengthening her communication, teamwork and confidence. Presentations, group activities and working with people from different backgrounds have helped her develop skills she can take into the workplace and use in her future career.

Her lecturer, Richie, has also played an important role in Dema’s experience, creating a welcoming and supportive classroom where she felt comfortable asking questions and developing her skills.

One of Dema’s biggest lessons has been that it is never too late to try something new. She encourages others not to let doubt hold them back, believing that even if something doesn’t work out, you will always know you gave it a try.

Dema would recommend Business Administration to anyone looking to develop transferable skills. Alongside administration and digital skills, the course has introduced her to topics including cyber security, mental wellbeing and British Values.

Looking ahead, Dema plans to continue developing her administration and writing skills, study data analysis online and explore marketing as a potential career after her mentor suggested it could be a good fit for her.

Reflecting on her journey so far, there is one thing Dema wishes she could tell her former self: “Why didn’t you do it earlier?”

After just four weeks, Dema has gained new skills, confidence and a renewed sense of ambition. Now, she is taking the next steps towards the career and future she wants.
