Welding is a vital engineering skill used to create high-strength joints between two or more metal components. As a General Welder apprentice, you will use electrical energy to generate an arc, producing intense heat that melts and fuses metals together to form strong, reliable connections. Developing good manual dexterity is essential, as precise control of the welding arc is key to producing high-quality work.

You will spend a majority of your time in your workplace learning on the job, and you will have dedicated time at College to consolidate your learning and ensure you are developing the skills needed for the sector.

Throughout your training, you will learn a wide range of welding techniques and processes. Each method requires a different level of skill, knowledge, and control to ensure welds meet the required standards and avoid defects. You will also work with a variety of metals, each with its own unique properties and behaviours.

Welding plays a crucial role across almost every sector of industry, meaning there is strong demand for skilled professionals. Opportunities can be found in industries such as automotive, marine, transport, general fabrication, and construction. General Welders contribute to the production of components for cars, ships, and rail vehicles, as well as structural steelwork for buildings, bridges, and large frameworks.

As a safety-critical role, welding requires a high level of responsibility. You will be expected to produce work that meets strict quality standards, ensuring that finished products are safe, reliable, and fit for purpose.

 

Location

Workplace, and at EKC Canterbury College one day a week.
