After a successful run as a business owner, Michael’s life took an unexpected turn during the Covid pandemic when his company was forced to close. Since then, Michael has taken time out to focus on his family—but now, he’s ready to return to the tools and rebuild his future.

Michael recently completed the Level 2 Bricklaying course at the EKC Civil Engineering Training Centre (Hersden), and is already looking ahead. “In two weeks, I’ll be starting the Plastering course as well,” he says.
“It’s been great to be back on the tools and learning some new skills along the way. I’m hoping this course will be a stepping stone back into the industry. Eventually, I’d love to run my own multi-trades business.”
Returning to education wasn’t easy for Michael. “I was anxious about coming back to learning because of previous experiences,” Michael explained.
“But the environment here has really surprised me, it’s much better than I expected.” The calm and relaxed environment at the centre has helped Michael settle back into the role of a student, and has been the stepping stone back into the industry that he’s been looking for.

A big part of his positive experience has been his tutor, Will. “Will is the best thing about the course.
“He’s got a laid-back attitude that really helps. If you’re stuck, he doesn’t just repeat the same thing, he’ll find another way to help you understand. That makes a huge difference.”
With a supportive atmosphere and hands-on learning, Michael is proving that it’s never too late to re-skill and start again. From bricklaying to plastering, he’s laying the foundations for a new future in the trades, and he’s just getting started.

If you too would like to begin your journey into a trade, or need the motivation to get back into the world of work, why not consider one of our six-week courses – perfect for anyone looking for the next step.
